Built in 1933 Tovarishch had a long and useful life as a sail-training vessel, first for the German Navy and then under the Soviet flag based in Ukraine. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union her survival became less assured, and since the early 1990s she has been in need of a major refit. Now berthed in Stralsund, Germany, owned by Tall-Ship Friends e.V., she may at last be able to look forward to a future under sail.
