Description

Ted is the author of Canoecraft, one of the top books on strip-building canoes. Kayakcraft covers four Steve Killing designs, including the 17' Endeavour. Also included in the book are lines and offsets for a 14' sport kayak, a 16'6" touring kayak, and a 20'6" tandem kayak.

Table of Contents:

  • Introduction
  • Kayak Design
  • Getting Organized
  • Machining the Planking
  • The Building Jig
  • The Skeleton: Stems and Sheer Clamps
  • The Skin: Planking
  • The Skin: Sanding
  • Fiberglassing the Hull
  • The Deck and Hull Interior

  • If you have ever built a strip canoe, you'll want this book for the designs as well as the additional techniques for making the cockpit coaming, hatches, and decking. And, if you already have some of the building skills, getting the low-down from a builder whose work hangs in museums is likely to improve your own technique a notch or two.

This is a well written book without excessive amounts of history. I am mostly interested in finishing techniques given I have already built two cedar strip canoes. In building both cases I struggled to get the interior ends fiber glassed cleanly. I hope to learn tricks of the trade from this book.
