Spring 2009

This is an ALL ATKIN issue, with designs exclusively from William and John Atkin.

Table of Contents:

  • Rumbletumbleann, A lightly modified 24' New Haven sharpie. This handsome cat-ketch will float in only 10" of water. She'll take us exploring in the best coastal lagoons, and will look fine while she's at it.
  • New Hope, A 24' sloop-rigged sharpie with a shallow fixed keel. Commodious, uninterrupted accommodations.combined with a draft of 1'9". Goes together easily with sheet plywood or solid timber. By William & John Atkin
  • Pemaquid, An able 21' dory for sail, power, and oar. This easily built open motorsailer will extend our boating season into weather dangerous for lesser boats, and she'll be admired in any harbor. By William & John Atkin.
  • Little Water, An efficient 24'3" shoal-draft powerboat. This striking Jersey Sea Skiff draws only 14", although the diameter of her propeller measures a full 17". The secret resides in unique twin tunnels and the box deadwood. And she'll slide across the flats at 20 mph pushed by a modest engine of 75-90 hp. From William Atkin.
  • Eric & Thistle, An oceangoing 32' ketch. Designed for ultimate rough-water survival, not for speed, this double-ended voyager will get us there and back in good shape. From William Atkin.
  • A 32' raised-deck amidships, cutter-rigged variant of the ketch described above. Perhaps yet stronger and more able.
  • Amos Brown, A 22'5" convertible sloop. Built with plywood, this striking little cruiser features a removable cloth housetop. While sailing, we'll enjoy full standing headroom and bright sunshine in the main cabin. At night, we can lie in the berths and watch the stars circle overhead as our boat swings to her anchor.

Mike O'Brien's Boat Design Quarterly magazine describes plans for paddle, oar, power, and sail.

The boats come from the boards of Atkin, Benford, Bolger, Chapelle, Gillmer, Stambaugh, Stephens, and other leading designers.

    Each issue of BDQ includes:

  • Quality reproductions of the designers' original drawings
  • Complete hull lines for most boats
  • Full particulars, including calculated performance ratios
  • Designers' addresses and phone numbers
  • Succinct design commentary
