Originally published in 1941, Lodestar Books in the UK has just republished the text and added new drawings as well as photographs. Written by Conor O'Brien, it's a no-nonsense guide for the sail-and-oar cruising crowd focusing on construction, set-up and handling of small boats. Most of the ideas and advice are gained from experience, although Conor also offers ideas he had yet to try. Pictured is Tim Cooke's small lugger An Suire (The Sea-Nymph), built to Francois Vivier's ILUR design, including full page and spread photographs, as well as drawings. ILUR embodies to perfection the boat attributes advanced by O'Brien. She is sailed and pictured in the waters off south-west Ireland which O'Brien knew well.
