The 2017 Small Boats Annual magazine is now in stock here in beautiful downtown Brooklin, Maine. It will officially be on the newsstand by November 22, although some outfits will no doubt have it earlier. We've been publishing the Small Boats annual issue since 2007, and it is now a "best of" Small Boats Monthly, our on-line publication, which started-up two years ago.

We are pleased to tell you we have another new plan in stock. One of the prettier pulling boats around, Spur II is from the board of Phil Bolger, a refinement of his earlier design. As Mike O'Brien points out, when designers create a boat and build it for their own use, it's wise to pay attention. Mike reviewed Spur II in his magazine Boat Design Quarterly #11. While the Gloucester Light Dory was so pretty it was proclaimed to be Bolger's ticket into Heaven, it may be that Spur II was his back-up "plan".

We've had this next design in stock for over 30 years, but now it's also available as a digital download. The Asa Thompson skiff is a handsome 11-footer, and plans are dirt cheap. However, you will either need to know how to loft, or be curious enough to learn. This might be just the boat to learn by, as our Getting Started in Boats #18 by Karen Wales features this skiff. Several readers have commented that Karen's piece on lofting is the one that made the processes and concepts "click" for them.

And lastly, the West Coast Premier of The Restorer's Journey takes place on November 16, in San Rafael CA, at the Smith Rafael Film Center. Jon Wilson and filmmaker Oleg Harencar will be on-hand for a Q&A. MC is Jeremy Fisher Smith of Fisher Smith Boatworks in Tomales, and speakers include Ron Holland, Hank Easom, Alan Olson, and Milly Biller.
