On the cover: Garvin Morris and Freeland Ackert team up at Artisan Boatworks (Rockport, Maine) to ensure perfect alignment as they glue together long Sitka spruce mast staves. Ten will be shaped into the 84.3' (25.7m) high-performance mainmast for a new 65' (19.8m) CCA-era-inspired yawl from Pedrick Yacht Designs. Story on page 44.Photograph by Alison Langley.

FEATURES:

  • The Extraction by Paul Lazarus. To replace a failed V-8 marine diesel, Front Street Shipyard stripped the engine and hoisted the block through the main deck and out the stern of a 135' (41.1m) composite motoryacht-clearance, a quarter inch.
  • To Carry a Big Stick. by Stephen Olson. Pedrick Yacht Designs' reinterpretation of a CCA-era yawl required the firm to engineer complex high-performance spars of wood, carbon fiber, and G10, which were built by Artisan Boatworks.
  • Drilling for Rod Holders Refined by Bruce Pfund. With an inexpensive jig and a methodical approach, yard technicians can avoid the common pitfalls of weak, misaligned rod-holder installations.
  • The New Renewables by Tony Jones. One of the first builders of wind-farm-support vessels, the U.K.'s Aluminium Marine Consultants (AMC) works to stay on top of an evolving market by expanding its facilities-and its boats.
  • Showstoppers by Steve D'Antonio and Aaron Porter. Editors choose some of their favorite products from the fall and winter boat shows, including IBEX, METS, Refit, and boot Dusseldorf.
