Description

Nathanael Green Herreshoff was one of the giants of early 20th century yacht designs -an innovator, a bold thinker but most of all a designer of graceful, beautiful racing yachts, many of which are still winning classic regattas today. He designed an impressive array of outstanding gaff riggers and Bermudian sloops for the America's Cup and remains one of the most revered yacht designers of the twentieth century.

Having founded the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company with his (blind) brother John Brown Herreshoff in 1878, Nat designed a wide range of yachts, from the 162-foot Elenora, to the much beloved 16-foot Buzzard's Bay Boys Boat, known as 12 1/2 (for its waterline length). Captain Nat was affectionately known as "The Wizard of Bristol" for his success and inventiveness in all aspects of boat design and manufacturing.

This book is a magnificent photographic collection celebrating the wide variety and scale of Nat Herreshoff's work, showcasing his most outstanding yachts. Franco Pace's stunning photography captures their sheer grace and elegance in a truly fittingtribute, certain to please Herreshoff devotees as well as classic yacht fans. Each boat featured includes extensive interior shots as well as the boats in the element. Included are Eleonora, Mariette, Marilee, Oriole, Amorita, Alera, Cara Mia, Nautilus, Linnet, Mischief, Joyant, Bounty, Rugosa, and Ticonderoga, as well as small boats. Plus there are features on the Herreshoff Marine Museum, the NY 30 class, company historical photos, and the McClave, Philbrick and Giblin boatyard.

Crisscrossing the seas around the world in search of new images, Franco Pace each year takes thousands of photos of every kind of sailing vessel. The major international yachting magazines have all published his photographs, and there have been several exhibitions of his work, including one at the George Pompidou Centre in Paris.
