John "Rob Roy" MacGregor is considered the father of the canoe. He was a flamboyant figure, publicist, lecturer, author, illustrator, and lawyer by trade.
This book was first published in 1867, and recounts his trips in a 21' yawl, from England to France. Known as the book that launched a thousand boats, because of all the readers who wanted to emulate his example of simple, adventurous travel.
