Here is one brilliant invention. Take a laser pointer, re-work the lens so it will spray a pattern visible for miles, and you have an invaluable, indispensable (and just about all the other adjectives) SAFETY TOOL.
The inventor is a search and rescue bush pilot (30 years experience) from Alaska. He developed this out of a strong need to help save lives.
It works by having the beam create a line-- a fan of light--that would appear to a pilot as a flash of light. The farther away, the longer the beam. Proven visible from over twenty miles away. The limitation for land-to-land visibility is the limit of the curve of the earth... so at water level, that is approximately 3 miles. But, if you are pointing for a rescue plane....
Interesting stats:
-- 8,000 times brighter than a flashlight at 1000 feet
-- 72 hours of illumination
-- waterproof to 80 feet
-- won't burn anything, as a traditional flare might
-- powered by two AA batteries (included, oddly enough!)
-- compact: 6" long, about 3/4" diameter, metal casing
-- signal up to 20 miles away
-- at 16 miles, the fan of light is 6000 feet high!
-- cat heaven. They seem to get addicted to playing with the light beam.
