We've recently changed our oar leather kits to include much nicer leather... a 5-7oz Latigo which will be more durable as well as more handsome.
Along with enough leather to handle a pair of oars, you'll receive copper tacks, waxed thread, a pair of needles, and instructions. BUT, we no longer include "Buttons"... the strips of leather you can add to ring the top edge of the leathers.
Leather ought to be treated. Tom Montgomery has a great article in WB #68 or in the Instant Digital Download WB #68 where he talks about using lanolin (easily available from the drug store) straight on the leather or cutting it with linseed or olive oils, as well as using mink oil, saddle soap and others. He reminds us to coat your leather regularly, AND if for example, you're leathering oars, to not coat until after their done (avoids working with slippery leather).
